Investigative Locksmithing - Automotive Forensic Case Management and Procedures

The training aims to give course participants an understanding of the processes and procedures involved in Investigative Locksmithing and its value in the investigative field. Participants will become familiar with identification,
chemical extraction and recovery of exhibits, and examination techniques. They will be instructed in the importance of photographic record keeping, chain of evidence, and standardised, effective recording of observations that allows for informative, concise report writing.

After the training, participants will receive a Certificate of Training recognised by ALOA and IAIL. Attainment of this Certificate will enable progression to the Investigative Locksmithing – Crime Scene Analysis Forensic Case Management and Procedures Course. The successful conclusion of this course will allow the participant to sit the CFL examination.

Introduction and Vehicle Examination

Day 1

Introduction and Vehicle Examination

The day will start with an introduction to the trainers and an overview of the role of forensic locksmithing in the investigative field. Participants will then learn how to use the Illustrated Technical Summary to inspect the perimeter security of a vehicle and examine its Ignition Steering Lock Assembly and electronic engine immobiliser. Instructors will also demonstrate how to interrogate the immobiliser system.

Next, there will be a discussion about the discovery process, with instructors showing participants what could be considered evidence and how to collect exhibits of probative value.

A vehicle will be set on fire to provide a practical demonstration of fire events, allowing participants to observe the sequence of events and fire development. A Key Forensic text outlining the fire event sequence will also be provided to participants for future reference.

The vehicle will be stored undercover to cool and drain overnight.

Fire Damaged Vehicle Examination

Day 2

Fire Damaged Vehicle Examination

On the second day of the first course, we will be inspecting a fire damaged vehicle using the template we learned on the first day to record our observations. We will then have a discussion about our findings, and the instructors will provide additional information and observations as needed.

During this session, we will also learn how to identify and collect exhibits that require further laboratory examination. The instructors will demonstrate proper techniques for collecting, storing, and labelling exhibits to maintain the chain of custody and prevent any evidence spoilage.

Forensic Evidence Extraction and Chain of Custody Maintenance

Day 3

Forensic Evidence Extraction and Chain of Custody Maintenance

Attendees will review the previous day's events and have an opportunity to ask questions.

They will then examine the exhibits collected from the fire-damaged vehicle and learn how to extract critical components using chemical techniques.

In a hands-on session, participants will prepare exhibits for return to the lab, learning how to label and document them properly.

By the end of the day, participants will have gained practical experience in extracting and recovering evidence and maintaining the chain of custody.

Exhibit Processing, Fire Event Analysis, and Key Analysis Techniques

Day 4

Exhibit Processing, Fire Event Analysis, and Key Analysis Techniques

Participants will learn about the various methods used to clean and process exhibits. They will also learn about the macro and microscopic examination processes used to analyse evidence and how to create photographic records.

Participants can ask questions and share observations, further deepening their understanding of the techniques used in analysing fire-damaged vehicles.

The session will then shift focus to key analysis. Participants will learn how to diagnose transponders and determine whether a key is a primary or secondary use key, OEM or aftermarket, and whether it's a duplicate. This will involve a hands-on demonstration of diagnostic interrogation techniques.

CCTV and Case Analysis

Day 5

CCTV and Case Analysis

Participants will review the key concepts covered throughout the course and analyse real-life case examples using their newly acquired forensic locksmithing skills. They will also learn how to analyse CCTV footage related to alleged thefts. The day will conclude with a presentation of Certificates to participants who have completed the course, providing a great opportunity for participants to celebrate their achievement and network with peers and instructors.
